Church PDF Print E-mail

ImageSovanapoom Church is held in the auditorium of the Community Centre.  We have morning services every Sunday and regular meetings all through the week.  We as a church believe that the Holy Bible is the true and living Word of God. We believe in the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Our church congregation includes the children and adults who reside at Sovanapoom Community Centre and others who live in the nearby villages.  We often have visitors and volunteers from overseas who join us also.

The Sunday service is an energetic time of praise and worship with a practical study of the Word, usually preached in Khmer. We believe strongly in faith healing and welcome anybody with needs to request prayer.

Whilst we do welcome donations and giving towards the Sovanapoom Church which are used for needs within the church community and outreach, any donations towards the church are not tax deductible.

Orphanage PDF Print E-mail

ImageWhen John and Tess first came to Cambodia they never intended to start an orphanage or look after children. However when sick and dying children were brought to them, they were moved with compassion and the love of Jesus. Sharing their home and their food, what little belongings they had, and their lives with these children, teenagers and young mothers in need.

Since 1998 there are hundreds of children whose lives have been saved through emergency intervention provided at the Sovanapoom Centre by John, Tess and the young leaders who live and work with them.  Babies whose mothers had no milk or money to feed them, children dying of starvation and disease, teenagers at risk of trafficking and adults with nowhere left to turn. Today alone there are over 100 people who received help from Sovanapoom in some form.  The Sovanapoom Centre is an oasis of life in often desperate situations.

Those who find a home with us have the opportunity to stay at the Sovanapoom Centre as they grow up and finish their education, learn a trade and gain employment.  The local Khmer culture is family and community oriented; the young people in our care will always be a part of our family no matter where they live.

To assist the students with employment opportunities we will be helping those interested to establish businesses and co-operative ventures as we work towards sustainability for both the individuals and the Sovanapoom Centre.  In this way we will continue to make a difference in the lives of those most in need.

At present we are still in need of donations as we support the children and continue the life-changing work at the Sovanapoom Centre.  If you can help with a donation or wish to volunteer your time, please see the how you can help page now.

School PDF Print E-mail

ImageWith children living in their home it soon became obvious to John and Tess that a school would be necessary to educate them. For many years they personally taught the children lessons daily, now several of the original young people have grown up and are passing on their knowledge to the next generation.

The children in Sovanapoom School are both orphaned and from extremely poor families.  The students of Sovanapoom School live at the Centre and attend school together six days a week.  All the children, no matter what their background are receiving a free education of an international standard.  The curriculum is taught in English with lessons also in the Khmer language.  The children also receive other extra-curricular education through the teaching of visitors and volunteers who donate their time with us.

Over the years we’ve had up to five classes of children learning in the one school room.  The teachers and students are very much looking forward to the completion of our new building so that they can move into their purpose built classrooms.  It’s not easy learning when you have no desk to sit at and you have to share your classroom with so many people.  The children do remarkably well in the present conditions but we are all anticipating the day when we have all the resources necessary for their education.

You can help make this happen.  Please see our donate funds page to make a donation towards the school or building projects!

Vocational Training PDF Print E-mail
Image An important focus of the work at Sovanapoom is vocational training.  We believe that it is imperative to provide care and support not only for the children but also providing assistance as the trainees grow up into young adults.  Without such vocational training or the benefits of the input they have received as children would be limited if we put them back on the street without adequately equipping these young people for their futures.

All trainees at Sovanapoom will be educated and provided with the knowledge and tools should they desire and be called as church ministers.  Not only equipped spiritually but we believe a rounded education is necessary that it is beneficial for even church ministers to also have a trade, as did the Apostle Paul.

The young men, have been in training as apprentice builders under the guidance of John (one of his previous vocations was in construction).  They are learning with hands-on experience as they work on the construction of our new building and other construction projects both locally and further abroad in Cambodia.

Not to be outdone, the young women of Sovanapoom are training in various pursuits.  Vocations represented include beauticians, administration assistant, seamstress, domestic workers and teachers.
