With children living in their home it soon became obvious to John and Tess that a school would be necessary to educate them. For many years they personally taught the children lessons daily, now several of the original young people have grown up and are passing on their knowledge to the next generation.
The children in Sovanapoom School are both orphaned and from extremely poor families. The students of Sovanapoom School live at the Centre and attend school together six days a week. All the children, no matter what their background are receiving a free education of an international standard. The curriculum is taught in English with lessons also in the Khmer language. The children also receive other extra-curricular education through the teaching of visitors and volunteers who donate their time with us. Over the years we’ve had up to five classes of children learning in the one school room. The teachers and students are very much looking forward to the completion of our new building so that they can move into their purpose built classrooms. It’s not easy learning when you have no desk to sit at and you have to share your classroom with so many people. The children do remarkably well in the present conditions but we are all anticipating the day when we have all the resources necessary for their education. You can help make this happen. Please see our donate funds page to make a donation towards the school or building projects!
