We are very grateful for all offers of assistance with the work that we do within Cambodia. However the role of a volunteer incurs a heavy responsibility to protect both the children and the reputation of Sovanapoom Care both within and outside Cambodia. It is for this reason that we have strict guidelines regarding volunteers at Sovanapoom Care. We hope and trust that you understand this policy. Our aim is to provide the students and beneficiaries of Sovanapoom Care with an environment for learning which provides the freedom and security to grow up as well adjusted young men and women. Sovanapoom Care promotes student learning both within and outside the classroom setting, promotes self-esteem building and encourages independence by providing on-the-job vocational training for senior students to prepare them for the workforce and life after school. All students are taught to be well-behaved, polite, and gentle, following the Khmer cultural traditions of respect and esteem for elders. By restricting the volunteers regularly visiting for a short time and creating strong bonds with the children only for them to leave again causing emotional distress for the students, we aim to provide a stable environment for the students. Our goal is to have the Cambodian staff as the main teachers and carers, maintaining a family focused environment whilst the students are learning at Sovanapoom School. For this reason, we limit the number of volunteers visiting during school times. At the present time we are undergoing a review of our short-term volunteering policy, and whilst we do this we are not accepting any new short-term volunteers or applications. If you are interested to volunteer with Sovanapoom Care for a period of six months or more, please contact us with an email outlining your personal and work experience history for consideration. If you are in Cambodia and would like to visit Sovanapoom on a Sunday morning, this can be arranged. We accept visitors between 7am and 12pm on Sundays mornings only. Visits are during the Community Outreach Service and the Sovanapoom Church Service during which you may see the work of Sovanapoom Care also. Note: Sovanapoom Church and Community Outreach are not part of the tax deductible activities of Project J522.
